SOCI 388 Sociology of Education
3.00 credits
This course is a sociological analysis of American Schools and Schooling, with a particular focus on social inequality. The course will investigate how race, class, and gender shape student experiences and the policy efforts that have been (and could be) attempted to alleviate student inequalities. Throughout the course we will address the fundamental tension between the success of individuals and the collective good in education. This is a CEL course where you will be accompanying elementary school children in their walk to school--leaving campus at 645 am, and not returning to campus until 830 am (transportation time included and transportation provided). This means that you cannot register for a MWF 8 am course in the spring and take Sociology of Education, because you will not be back to Gonzaga in time.
Equivalent:
SOSJ 327 - OK if taken since Fall 2017
