Gonzaga School of Law Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Class of 1976
The Gonzaga Law Class of 1976 graduated during a year marked by significant milestones both on campus and around the world. As these graduates prepared to begin their legal careers, Gonzaga Law celebrated academic achievement and national recognition, while history unfolded with landmark events in technology, space exploration, and popular culture. The highlights below offer a glimpse into what made 1976 a memorable year for the Class of 1976.
At Gonzaga Law
- U.S. Supreme Court Justice William H. Rehnquist delivered the fifth annual William O. Douglas Lecture.
- The Gonzaga Student Bar Association, led by officers Patrick C. Cronan and Carl J. Butkus, received the Most Outstanding SBA Award. Dean Smithmoore P. Myers and Associate Dean Vern G. Davidson accepted the honor on the students' behalf.
- The American Bar Association established the Student Law Division.
- The Gonzaga Law Review, founded in 1966, continued to grow, with students including Helen Donigan, who later became a longtime member of the Gonzaga Law faculty.
Around the World in 1976
- Apple Computer was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne.
- On July 20, 1976, NASA's Viking 1 became the first U.S. spacecraft to successfully land on Mars and return color photographs of the Martian surface.
