Giving Back Through Virtual Mentoring and Networking

Ray Angle and Erin Shields discuss the impact the pandemic has had on career outcomes for Gonzaga’s Class of 2020 and how mentors can contribute to the success of our students and graduates.

  • Learn how to maximize the new platforms and programs Alumni Relations and Career and Professional Development have implemented to leverage the career support of the Gonzaga community.
  • Hear what our students and graduates need most now in terms of career guidance and connections and the ways you can most effectively assist them.
  • Spend time networking with your peers across the country attending the leadership summit.
  • Share your experiences and best practices as a mentor or employer for group discussion.

  1. Visit: zagsconnect.gonzaga.edu
  2. Click on the blue “Join our Community” button
  3. Select the “Alumni & Friends” tab
  4. The platform will prompt you to enter information on your professional background and ask you a series of questions regarding your areas of expertise
  5. Once your profile is built, select the “Groups” tab at the stop of your screen
  6. Click on “All Groups” and enter “Leadership Summit Volunteer Network” in the search field
  7. Click on the graphic for “Leadership Summit Volunteer Network”
  8. You will see a button reading “Join Group” on the top right, click “Join Group” to join

* To join a regional Chapter Group, repeat instructions 5–8 above, but in the search field enter the name of your city or region

 
  1. After building a mentor profile in ZagsConnect (see instructions above), select the “Projects” tab at the top of your screen
  2. At the right of your screen you will see a box with a graphic and a button reading “Post a project”. Click “Post a Project”
  3. You will now see several project templates to review. You can use one of these templates and it will guide you through writing a project description based on the type of project, or you can select the “Custom Project – Create Custom Project” box to create your own
  4. After posting a project, Erin will review and approve the project
  5. Once approved, the project will be visible to students and alumni who are looking for professional experiences
  6. Students and alumni will apply for the project by submitting their resumes, which you can review
  7. You can correspond with applicants through the platform and offer the project to the applicant you chose through the platform
  8. Once hired, you are free to make remaining arrangements and discuss further details with the student or alumni via the platform, email, phone or Zoom

Financial Support for Students’ Professional Development
For students who demonstrate significant financial need, CPD and Alumni Relations want to ensure that all barriers to career development are eliminated. If you would like to contribute to the CPD Gift Fund, proceeds will be used to help students purchase professional/interview attire, offset registration fees for Trek programs, and support expenses for students completing unpaid internships.
