Our Mission

The Center for the Study of Hate's mission, in alignment with Gonzaga University’s Jesuit identity, involves undertaking activities aimed at promoting reconciliation and overcoming hate. JHS is peer-reviewed and publishes interdisciplinary work that scrutinizes the roots and prevalence of hate in the contemporary world. First established in the year 2001 and credited with publishing foundational work within the field of Hate Studies, JHS has international distribution and welcomes contributions from various disciplines. Articles published in the journal examine hate in any of its manifestations (e.g. racism, misogyny, antisemitism, homophobia, religious intolerance, ethnic violence, anti-immigrant animus); consider how hate is institutionalized, maintained, or perpetrated through culture, organizations, policies, politics, media, discourses, and epistemologies; and develop, adapt, or refine the methods used for understanding or overcoming hate. JHS reflects the optimism that as hate is understood, it can be contained and controlled, allowing for persons to reach their full human potential.

Journal of Hate Studies Receives DOAJ Seal of Approval

DOAJ Seal

The Journal of Hate Studies has received the Seal of Approval from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), an online directory of high quality, peer-reviewed, open access journals. The Seal is awarded to a select number of journals in the DOAJ that adhere to highest standards of publishing and openness.

To qualify for the Seal, journals must demonstrate their commitment to open access and publishing best practices by meeting seven criteria in the areas of accessibility, openness, discoverability, reuse, and author rights. Of the 15,000 open access journals indexed in the DOAJ, only 1,398 have received the Seal. This recognition from the DOAJ further establishes the Journal of Hate Studies as a high-quality, open access publication venue.

Vision

JHS is an international scholarly journal promoting the sharing of interdisciplinary ideas and research relating to the study of what hate is, where it comes from, and how to combat it. It presents cutting-edge essays, theory, and research that deepen the understanding of the development and expression of hate. JHS aims to provide a deeper understanding of the processes that encourage the expression of hate so that methods of challenging and stopping its expression may be based on theory and research. JHS reflects the optimism that as hate is understood, it can be contained and controlled allowing for persons to reach their full human potential without fear of retribution.
