Dr. John Eliason, Global Engagement Faculty Fellow

As the 2023-24 Center for Global Engagement Faculty Fellow, I envision an active campaign to solicit feedback from faculty and academic support staff working with multilingual international students from across the curriculum. With this feedback, I will collaborate with my colleagues on the International Student Pedagogy Advisory Board (ISPAB) and other offices and programs at Gonzaga to help shape a coherent system of support focused on the design, implementation, and communication of resources for multilingual students and their faculty and academic support staff.
The contexts for my attention will include teaching, advising, and the relevant academic support units. Resources collaboratively developed with selected colleagues will range from ISPAB-sponsored faculty workshops to asynchronous content for faculty and staff seeking information about how best to support multilingual students. Transparency and clarity in communication about the types and kinds of academic support available will constitute an essential aspect of my work. I will seek to identify and assist in publicizing available resources students should seek and under what circumstances. Faculty and academic support staff also need to understand where to turn, and they must be provided information “just in time” if they are to do their best for all their students. This of course includes not only multilingual international students but also monolingual and multilingual students from the U.S.
It is my privilege to serve in this role. I especially look forward to working with the ISPAB, the Center for Global Engagement teams (Associate Provost for Global Engagement, the English Language Center, the International Education Council, and International Student and Scholar Services), the Center for Teaching and Advising, and the Center for Student and Academic Success.
