About
Gonzaga’s Jesuit, Catholic, Humanistic education will challenge and inspire you.
Gonzaga University acknowledges the harm caused this semester, and in the past, by incidents of racist language and behavior, and the broader reality of racism that continues to affect members of our community. We are deeply sorry for that harm. We also recognize that, at times, our response has not fully reflected the care, clarity, and accountability our students deserve. We take responsibility for this and commit to doing better.
As a Jesuit, Catholic institution, Gonzaga is called to honor the dignity of every person, to walk in solidarity with those who experience injustice, and to pursue truth with courage and humility. Our mission invites us not only to respond in moments of harm, but to examine ourselves honestly and to act in ways that foster justice, healing, and belonging.
We are grateful for the leadership and advocacy of the Black Student Union, the Unity Alliance of Cultural Clubs, the student coalition, and many others who have spoken with honesty and care for this community. We also recognize the efforts of student organizations and campus groups that have taken responsibility within their own communities to confront anti-Blackness, colorism, and racism and to support those affected. This shared work reflects the kind of community we are called to be.
Racist and/or harassing conduct is a violation of our values and our policies. When it occurs, it will be addressed through our conduct processes, and individuals found responsible will be held accountable. At the same time, we acknowledge the need for greater transparency and clarity in how we communicate about these processes, and we are committed to improving in this area.
We are also committed to the safety and well-being of all students, especially those who may feel particularly vulnerable. Gonzaga will continue to provide support and advocacy so that all students can participate fully in campus life with a sense of safety and belonging.
Through the work of the President’s Task Force on Accompaniment, Safety and Belonging, the University is advancing concrete steps to strengthen our policies, improve coordination, and address campus climate. This work reflects our Jesuit commitment to reflection and action, learning from experience and moving forward with purpose.
We also commit to providing more timely, transparent, and consistent communication during moments that affect student safety and the life of our community. Leadership requires presence, clarity, and care, especially in difficult moments.
Gonzaga’s mission calls us to be a community of justice, compassion, and belonging. We take this responsibility seriously and will continue this work with humility, accountability, and hope, grounded in our shared commitment to one another.
