President's Cabinet

Dr. Bertagnolli was appointed Interim Provost in July 2024. She oversees six Schools, one College, Foley Library, and the Gonzaga-in-Florence campus as well as Academic Affairs, Faculty Affairs, Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, Global Engagement, and Accreditation and Assessment. Dr. Bertagnolli is a tenured Professor of Biology who began her academic career at the University in 1993. Her leadership roles have included serving as Chair of the Biology Department and the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Director of the Center for Teaching and Advising, Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and the inaugural Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. Dr. Bertagnolli holds a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Utah and a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Gonzaga Universifty.

Mr. Browne oversees all enrollment management functions, including Admissions, Financial Aid & Scholarships, the Center for Lifelong Learning, and enrollment operations and administration. His higher education leadership includes senior roles at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of California Merced, and the University of California Santa Cruz. He also served nearly a decade as Vice President of the American University in Cairo and completed four years of service with the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Browne holds terminal degrees in psychology and specializes in service-related trauma research across the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

Mr. Heimbigner was appointed his current position in 2025 after serving two years as Interim Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communications. Areas of responsibility include the University’s brand, publications, website, social media and digital marketing, as well as strategic communications and media relations. He joined the University in 2010 as Director of Marketing Services and was promoted to Senior Director of Integrated Marketing and Web Communications in 2015. He holds a B.S. in Professional & Technical Communications from Montana Technological University.

Erin E. Kastberg joined Gonzaga University May 1, 2026. Mrs. Kastberg is responsible for the management of all legal matters, integrating the General Counsel function with the broader operational life of the University. She serves as secretary to the Board of Trustees and advises the Board, the President, the Provost, Vice Presidents, faculty and staff on a wide range of issues. She previously served at Bradley University, the University of Wisconsin System Office of General Counsel, and in private practice. She is a graduate of Iowa State University with honors and distinction and the University of Iowa College of Law, where she was a member of the Iowa Law Review and Moot Court Board.

Mr. Kliewer joined the University in his current role in 2022, bringing experience from both industry and higher education. His areas of responsibility include Human Resources, Campus Security and Public Safety, Risk Management, Compliance, and Internal Audit. He earned an M.Ed. in Human Resource Development and a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Louisville. He holds a Senior Certified Professional certification through the Society for Human Resource Management and a Senior Professional in Human Resources certification through the HR Certification Institute.

Dr. Maccarone was appointed Vice President for Mission Integration in October 2024 after serving as Acting Vice President for Mission Integration for two years. She oversees the offices of University Ministry, Tribal Relations, Mission Engagement, and Inclusive Excellence.  Dr. Maccarone joined the University as an Assistant Professor of Philosophy in 2005 and previously served as Associate Professor of Philosophy and Faculty Advisor to the President. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Florida, an M.A. in Philosophy from Colorado State University, and a B.A. in Political Science from The George Washington University.

Mr. Porterfield was named Vice Provost for Student Affairs in July 2020. He is responsible for the leadership, coordination, evaluation, administration and management of the student services, programs and activities. The departments and prorams under his leadership are the Center for Cura Personalis, Center for Student Academic Success, Center for Student Involvement, Center for Community Engagement, Gonzaga Outdoors, Health and Counseling Services, Housing & Dining, the Lincoln LGBTQ+ Resource Center, New Student & Family Programs, Office of Health Promotion, Opportunity Northeast, the Payne Center for Leadership Development, the Resolution Center for Student Conduct and Conflict, Student Media, the Office of Sustainability, Transfer Veteran & Returning Adult Services and First Generation Initiatives, and the Unity and Multicultural Education Center.

Mr. Poss was appointed Vice President for University Advancement 2010 and Interim Chief of Staff in 2025.  He oversees University Relations, which encompasses University Advancement. Donor Relations, Alumni Relations, Marketing and Communications, and External and Legislative Affairs. Mr. Poss joined the University in 1998 and has held multiple roles in University Relations/University Advancement.  He earned a B.A. in Criminal Justice from Gonzaga University.

Mr. Smith has served as Chief Financial Officer since 2018, following seven years as Associate Vice President for Finance. He oversees the primary accounting, finance, facilities, and information technology functions of the University, including the Controller’s Office, Budget and Financial Analysis, Treasury, Information Technology Services, Plant and Construction Services, and Auxiliary Enterprises. Mr. Smith joined the University in 2010 after nine years as an auditor with KPMG and Arthur Andersen. Mr. Smith earned a B.B.A. in Accounting from the University and an M.B.A. from the University of Washington. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA).

Mr. Standiford has served as Gonzaga University’s Director of Athletics since 2021, following six years as Deputy Director of Athletics and Chief Operating Officer. Since joining Gonzaga Athletics in 1993, he has contributed across nearly every facet of the department, providing leadership in operations, facilities, finance, revenue generation, and sport administration. He has also provided administrative oversight for Gonzaga’s nationally recognized men’s and women’s basketball programs, including the men’s program’s 27 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Most recently he led Gonzaga’s transition to the Pac-12 Conference. Mr. Standiford earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and a master’s degree in Athletic Administration from Gonzaga University.
