It is with great pleasure that I inform you of my decision to appoint Fr. Frank E. Case, S.J. as the university’s next Vice President for Mission. Fr. Case has accepted this appointment and will take up his position on June 8, 2011.
Fr. Case entered the Jesuits in 1956 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1969, following studies at St. Louis University and Alma College, California. He holds an A.B., Ph.L., and M.A. in Economics from St. Louis U., an S.T.M. in Theology from Santa Clara (1970), and a Ph.D. in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis (1980). He served as a tenured assistant and associate professor of Economics at Seattle University (1975-1986). Fr. Case has had extensive experience in the governance of the Society of Jesus, serving (among other roles) as Provincial Superior of Oregon (1986-1990), Regional Assistant for the United States, Jesuit Curia Rome (1990-2005), and General Secretary of the Society of Jesus (2005-2008). He participated in each of the last three General Congregations of the Society of Jesus and many national and international meetings. Since 2008, he has served as Jesuit Assistant for the Business and Law Schools at Seattle University.
The Vice President for Mission serves as the President’s chief adviser on matters related to Jesuit and Catholic institutional identity. A primary responsibility of the VP for Mission is to ensure that the faculty and staff of the University have opportunities to learn about and deepen their understanding of the institution’s educational mission and their part in fulfilling it, as guided by its Mission Statement and the University’s Strategic Plan, and as reflected in the documents and decrees of the Society of Jesus and the Catholic Church. Father Case’s nomination came with the enthusiastic support of all constituencies, and his appointment as Vice President for Mission was confirmed by the Board of Trustees at its meeting last Friday.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the members of the VP for Mission Search Committee and in particular its chair, Associate VP Joan Allbery, for the effort that has resulted in this successful outcome. Thanks as well to all members of the university community who participated in the interview process and provide input to the search. In a special way, I would like to thank Mission Advisory Group Co-chairs Sr. Mary Garvin, Fr. Steve Kuder, S.J., and Jane Hession, and their colleagues on the Mission Advisory Group, for the exemplary manner in which they have served the university during this year of transition. Thank you all.
