Competitive Fellowships & Scholarships Services

Students across the nation apply annually for a variety of competitive fellowship and scholarship programs. Many of these well-known and prestigious opportunities attract high-achieving, purpose-driven, service-oriented, and globally-minded students – many who go on to make significant impacts in their chosen professions, or in their local or global communities. We believe that Gonzaga University students possess the academic ability, experience, and individual potential to be serious contenders for these awards.

Career & Professional Development (CPD) serves as the first step in exploring and applying for many of these fellowships and scholarships. Boren Awards
The Boren Awards fund the intensive study of language and culture abroad by U.S. undergraduate or graduate students. All eligible applicants have the option to either apply for a Regional Flagship Language Initiative or select/design their own study program.

Eisenhower Global Scholars Program
Eisenhower Fellows are diverse, dynamic, doers. Highly accomplished, mid-career professionals, with proven track records of leadership across many fields, they create innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing problems through individual projects that drive transformational change.

Ford Foundation International Fellowship
The Ford Foundation’s pioneering, decade-long International Fellowships Program (IFP) supported advanced studies for social change leaders from the world’s most vulnerable populations. The program was established in 2001 with an initial grant of $280 million—the largest single grant in the foundation’s history. By 2013, more than 4,300 fellows from 22 countries—spanning Asia, Africa, Latin America, Russia, and the Middle East—completed graduate or postgraduate degree programs.

Application Deadline: There is no application deadline. Fellows are nominated by selected nominators from Ford’s regional offices and the Fellowship team.

Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship
Twelve exceptional student leaders of color will be selected to conduct a comparative study of social justice leadership in America, South Africa, and Ireland. During the four-week summer program, Fellows will travel to Washington, DC, Cape Town, Dublin, Derry, and Belfast to explore the legacies of Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, John Lewis, Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Daniel O’Connell, John Hume, and other giants of social change. Must be a current freshman, sophomore or junior.

Gates-Cambridge logo

Gates-Cambridge Scholarship
Each year Gates Cambridge offers c.80 full-cost scholarships to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Approximately two-thirds of these awards will be offered to PhD students, with approximately 25 awards available in the US round and 55 available in the International round.

The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program, named to honor former US Senator George Mitchell's pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service.

Gilman International Scholarship
The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. To be eligible for the Gilman Program, applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship.

Global Health Corps selects young professionals for paid, 13-month fellowships with organizations promoting health equity in East Africa, Southern Africa, and the United States. For each Global Health Corps site, one national fellow and one international fellow are paired to promote cross-cultural awareness and understanding. Global Health Corps provides financial support, professional development, and mentorship to hundreds of fellows each year.

Support for undergraduate students intending to enter careers in natural science, mathematics or engineering research; not intended for clinical career goals.

The Marshall Scholarship is a postgraduate scholarship for intellectually distinguished young Americans to study at any university in the United Kingdom.

Application Deadline: Application deadline for the 2024 cycle have not been published; however, applications are typically due in September for the following academic year.

Rhodes Scholarships logo Rhodes Scholarship
The Rhodes Scholarship is a fully-funded, full-time, postgraduate award which enables talented young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford.

Application Deadline: 2024 application deadline has not been published yet but the 2022 deadline was October 3.

Rotary Peace Fellowship logo Rotary Peace Fellowship
Through academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities, the Rotary Peace Centers program develops the capacity of peace and development professionals to become effective catalysts for peace. The fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and internship and field-study expenses.

Application Deadline: Application opens in February 2023. Endorsed applications must be submitted by July 1, 2023.

Schwarzman Scholars logo Schwarzman Scholars
Schwarzman Scholars is a fully-funded, one-year master’s degree and leadership program at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. At the heart of the program are world-renowned advisers, a rigorous and innovative study of global affairs, and hands-on exploration of Chinese culture and commerce.

Voyager Scholarship logo The Voyager Scholarship
This Obama Foundation public service scholarship gives college students financial aid to alleviate the burden of college debt (up to $25,000 for their junior and senior years), meaningful travel experiences to expand their horizons ($10,000 stipend for summer work-travel between their junior and senior years), and a network of mentors and leaders to support them.
