Land Acknowledgement: an exhibition curated by Charlene Teters

A Contemporary Art Exhibition featuring seventeen contemporary Native American artists

Gonzaga University Urban Arts Center, Nov. 4-Dec. 3, 2022

At the Gonzaga University Urban Arts Center, opening November 4, 2022, on the land of the Spokane Tribal people, Charlene Teters (Spokane) will curate an exhibition of local native artists who will create art around this subject and question. Artists will attend the opening November 4, 4:00- 7:00pm.

Land Acknowledgements began as a challenge to audiences about their ignorance of the history about the original people and whose land they occupy. In the early 90’s it was in fact a radical statement seeking to make non-Indian America think and respond to yet another area of failure in education.

In 2022, Land Acknowledgements have become a pro-forma act almost required of US indigenous speakers, whose original intent has been suffocated by the tsunami of historical feel-good fiction about the origins of European empire building in North America. One hardly can hear the begged question Land Acknowledgments asks, “what happened to these people?”

Teters earned an AFA from Institute of American Indian Arts, a BFA from the College of Santa Fe, and an MFA from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In addition, she was awarded two honorary degrees, a Doctor of Fine Arts from Mitchell College in New London, CT and a Doctorate of Humanities from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM. In 2002, she received a New Mexico Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts from then Governor Gary Johnson.

In the Dance: Mexican Masks
En la Danza: Mascaras Mexicanas

Gonzaga University Urban Arts Center, October 8-22, 2022

decorative image

In the Dance includes a selection of dance and decorative masks, mostly related to the pastorela danza, from the Lake Paztcuaro region of Michoacan. Within the pastorelas, religious figures and narratives mix and cavort with contemporary celebrities and other characters familiar to contemporary audiences. Through comic mixings and juxtapositions, present-day cultural meanings, experiences, and social issues are dramatized, explored, and presented back to the community in humorous and impactful ways.

Opening Reception:

October 7, 3-7 pm
(Gallery talk by exhibit curator at 4 pm)

Open Hours:
