The Journalism major will:

  • Be adept at articulating the roles that journalism plays at each level of American government through the lens of historical context and democratic norms.
  • Demonstrate the ability to gather newsworthy information via research, interviews and observation, and craft stories using that information, in appropriate journalistic style.
  • Demonstrate media content creation acumen with attention to format, grammar, punctuation and AP Style.This includes emerging media and mastery of digital storytelling skills.
  • Be able to edit journalistic writing to be contextual, accurate and relevant for multiple media platforms in a deadline environment.
  • Perform high-level critical media analysis in a variety of contexts.
  • Understand the boundaries and protections of media law and the guidelines for ethical journalistic behaviors, taking into account a mutable political environment, and engage in journalistic practices that transcend minimum industry standards to foster trust in the profession.
