SUBJ: Appointment of Dr. Patricia O’Connell Killen as Academic Vice President
DATE: March 1, 2010
It is with great pleasure that I inform you of my decision to appoint Dr. Patricia O’Connell Killen as the university’s next Academic Vice President. Dr. Killen has accepted this appointment and will take up her position on July 1, 2010.
Dr. Killen received her B.A. in Religious Studies from Gonzaga University in 1974, and both her M.A. in Religious Studies and Ph.D. in Religious Studies-American Religious History are from Stanford University. In addition to her time at her current institution, Dr. Killen has taught at several universities, including Loyola Chicago and the University of the South. Dr. Killen currently serves as Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, where she has been a member of faculty for twenty years.
Dr. Killen, one of three finalists who interviewed on campus this winter, was the top nominee of the AVP Search Committee. Her nomination came with the enthusiastic support of all constituencies, and her appointment as Academic Vice President has been approved by the Board of Trustees. Dr. Killen will hold faculty rank as tenured Professor of Religious Studies, made with the recommendation of the Department, Dean, and AVP, an appointment concurrent with the start of her administrative appointment.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the members of the AVP Search Committee and in particular its chair, Dr. Jane Rinehart, for the extraordinary effort that has resulted in this successful result. Thanks as well to all members of the university community who participated in the interviews and provide input to the search. In a special way, I would like to thank Earl Martin and his colleagues in the Academic Vice President’s office for the exemplary manner in which they have served the university during this year of transition. Thank you to you all.
