Amgen Scholars U.S. Program
The Amgen Scholars U.S. Program provides hundreds of selected undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at some of the nation’s leading educational institutions. Currently, 10 universities in the U.S. host the summer research program.
Arizona State University Quantitative Research in the Life and Social Sciences Program (QRLSSP)
QRLSSP is an intensive eight week summer research experience for undergraduates that prepares young scientists for the rigors of graduate studies in working at the interface of mathematics, statistics, and the natural and social sciences. QRLSSP enables students to conduct research in their own areas of interest in a small group setting.
Cornell Friends & Foes REU Program
The Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences School of Integrative Plant Science Plant Pathology & Plant-Microbe Biology Microbial Friends & Foes Research Experience for Undergraduates program provides training in the concepts and experimental approaches central to understanding microbial interactions with eukaryotic hosts. Students work with faculty mentors in the Section of Plant Pathology & Plant-Microbe Biology (PPPMB). A common theme among research programs in PPPMB is investigation of interspecific interactions, both mutualistic and antagonistic.
Gerstner Sloan-Kettering Grad School of Biomedical Sciences
The Louis V. Gerstner, Jr. Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, sponsors a ten-week research program for outstanding undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a career in the biomedical sciences. The ten-week Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), which begins on the first Monday in June, is designed for approximately 20 outstanding undergraduate freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are interested in pursuing a career in biomedically related sciences. Applicants must have research experience.
Keck Graduate Institute Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Program
The SURE program for undergraduate research in biotechnology and bioengineering at Keck Graduate Institute provides undergraduate students the opportunity for cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research in the areas of applied molecular and cellular biology, bioengineering, computational biology, as well as exposure to related ethics and business topics.
The program is appropriate for motivated undergraduate students majoring in biology, chemistry, engineering, or related disciplines. One of the program goals is to promote the success of women and underrepresented minorities in science and engineering.
National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Program
The Hollings Scholarship Program provides successful undergraduate applicants with offers that include academic assistance for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year. The internship between the first and second years of the offer provides the Scholars with "hands-on"/ practical educational training experience in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Offers also include travel funds to attend a mandatory Hollings Scholarship Program orientation, conferences where students present a paper or poster, and a housing subsidy for scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship.
National Institutes of Health SIP
The Summer Internship Program (SIP) at the NIH provides an opportunity to spend the summer working side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research.
Penn State Hershey College of Medicine SURIP Program
The SURIP program is a 10-week research experience intended for college students who are interested in pursuing a career in the biological sciences. The typical intern will be between their Sophomore and Junior year or between their Junior and Senior year of undergraduate studies. Students who will have a BA or BS prior to the start of the internship should not apply.
SURIP is most appropriate for students considering application to Ph.D. programs in the Biomedical Sciences and is not intended for students who plan to apply to medical school. There is no clinical shadowing component to the internship. Students that are undecided or interested in combined degrees are welcome to apply.
Smithsonian Natural History Research Experiences
Natural History Research Experiences (NHRE) is a 10-week summer internship program hosted at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. NHRE interns work closely with scientific mentors to complete independent research projects in Earth Scienc, Biology, and Anthropology.
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Pediatric Oncology Education (POE) Program
The Pediatric Oncology Education program at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is funded by the National Institutes of Health / National Cancer Institute. The POE program offers a unique opportunity for students preparing for careers in the biomedical sciences, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, or public health to gain biomedical and oncology research experience. The POE program provides a short-term training experience (internship) in either laboratory research or clinical research. Students participating in the Pediatric Oncology Education program will receive training in a superb academic environment created by the interaction of committed basic scientists, research-oriented physicians, and postdoctoral fellows. Depending on their special interests, trainees will spend their rotations in a clinical research or a laboratory research setting. Trainees will be matched with a faculty mentor who shares their research interests and will participate in the mentor's ongoing research projects. Trainees attend a daily Lunch & Learn series designed specifically for them, as well as other clinical and basic research conferences.
A primary goal of the program is to encourage students to pursue a career in cancer research, either as a laboratory-based scientist or a physician scientist. Thus, qualified students with an interest in cancer research are particularly encouraged to apply.
University of Oregon Life Sciences Summer Program for Undergrad Research
The University of Oregon (UO) Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) offers fellowship opportunities for undergraduate students from other Universities and Colleges to participate in ongoing research in Life Sciences laboratories at UO during the Summer months.
University of Texas Southwestern SURF Program
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program at UT Southwestern’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences is an intensive summer research training experience designed for college students who are preparing for Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. careers in biomedical research.
University of Utah Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR)
The purpose of SPUR is to provide undergraduate students with an intensive 10-week research experience under the mentorship of a University of Utah faculty member. The program provides opportunities to gain research experience in a variety of disciplines.
University of Washington Summer Research Program
A number of summer research programs are hosted at the University of Washington each summer. These programs differ from other on-campus research opportunities in that they usually require a formal application process (often during Winter Quarter); may be open to non-UW students; have a fixed term during the summer (often 9-10 weeks); and are full-time or close-to-full-time commitments (30-40 hours/week).
Summer research programs give students the opportunity to have an immersive research experience during the summer period that might not be possible during the school year. Summer programs are a great chance for students to try something new or take their experience to the next level.
University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs
FHL is known worldwide for research in marine-related sciences, conducted by visiting as well as resident scientists throughout the year. Of special interest for undergraduate students is the opportunity to conduct research with a researcher mentor through Summer Research Internships. Full funding is available for qualified and selected candidates. Applications are due in early Spring of each year.
Washington State University (Spokane, WA), Summer Undergrad Research Fellowship Program
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences is now located in Spokane on the WSU Health Sciences campus. the 10-week SURF program offers its fellows a stipend while providing a hands-on research experience for undergraduate and professional students.
