ZagAlert FAQ

This resource is designed to provide facts and answers to common questions about the ZagAlert emergency notification system at Gonzaga University. If you do not find the information you're looking for on this resource, please visit the ZagAlert website or contact Emergency Preparedness.

ZagAlert is Gonzaga University's emergency notification system.

  1. Emergencies, incidents or disasters that impact the campus environment or the GU campus community. Messages will assist the recipient in making the best choice possible to protect their life safety. When possible, messages will include recommended actions or links for more information.
  2. University closures due to inclement weather or other safety concerns.
  3. Online learning / remote work notice (usually due to winter weather conditions). *Note that GU does not close campus or cancel all classes for winter weather. Instead, operations are shifted online.

  1. ZagAlerts automatically distribute to all Gonzaga faculty, staff and student emails
  2. All students, staff and faculty should add their mobile phone numbers to receive ZagAlerts via text message and phone call, as well as non-GU emails if desired.

  • GU personnel and students: Visit Zagweb and select the ZagAlert tile. Provide your information, then click “update” to save these updates.
  • Non-GU personnel: Opt in to receive alerts by texting "ZagAlert" to 77295.
  • Gonzaga parents: your student can also enter your contact numbers in the alternate number fields in the ZagAlert system.

If you are a current student, staff, or faculty member, you can only opt out of receiving phone calls or text to your personal phone; you will still receive the notice via your Gonzaga email.

Opt out of calls and messages to your mobile phone: text "Leave" to 77295.

The University will send the first ZagAlert message as soon as verified information is available, or at the direction of first response partners such as law enforcement or fire.

  • The initial message may be short, with a focus on any immediate life-saving measures necessary.
  • A follow-up message may be sent with a link to the Gonzaga University Emergency Information web page or other resource for further details.
  • When the emergency is resolved, a final "all-clear" ZagAlert message is sent.

Because social media is consumed by many people who are not physically near the University and would not have a need to know, most ZagAlert messages would not be posted to social media. Consideration will be made on a case-by-case basis.

  • If any instructions are provided (such as evacuate oravoid the area), follow those directions. (Learn more about these actions on the ZagReady page.)
  • Please do not contact Gonzaga University, including Campus Security & Public Safety, during this time unless you have information to report about the incident, or are experiencing a separate emergency. DO NOT assume the incident is over until you are officially notified via ZagAlert that the situation is resolved
  • Refrain from speculating about what is happening. Focus on staying safe and waiting for more information.

Your email is automatically enrolled in the system. Notifications will keep you informed of events that you need to be aware of, even if you are not on campus. For example, you will need to know when communication will be disrupted with professors on campus when an emergency occurs.

In a life-threatening emergency always call 911 first and then call Campus Security and Public Safety at 509-313-2222 if it is safe to do so.
