Mission Statement:  Gonzaga University’s Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is a club that strives to achieve hands-on experience in developing, planning, and working together towards projects within the mechanical and automotive field. Our club works closely with the School’s Manufacturing Technology Center, and focuses on providing exposure for students to apply classroom knowledge to club-based projects. Outreach is also a main club goal, and SAE has worked with Boy Scouts and with Spokane area middle school students to help promote STEM and inspire an engineering mindset in the next generation.

Annual Report:  In May we plan to compete in the SAE Baja Competition in Gorman, California. The SAE Baja Competition entails designing, building, and racing an off-roading, one-person vehicle with a 10 horsepower Briggs and Stratton engine. Members working on this project span from freshmen to seniors, each with different automotive and mechanical experience. Our club decided to redesign and rebuild our car, using what we learned from the competition last year to design for better efficiency. For this international and collegiate SAE Baja Series Competition, our team has researched concepts, designed systems, modeled all car components on SolidWorks, performed calculations, simulated impact testing using FEA software, and built the vehicle all within our SAE club.
