GEL Weekend 2014

GEL Weekend
Frequently Asked Questions

What is GEL Weekend?

Gonzaga Experience Live, affectionately referred to as "GEL Weekend," is an annual preview event for high school seniors who have earned acceptance to the University. The weekend gives prospective students and their families the opportunity to experience the best that Gonzaga and Spokane have to offer, including our academic programs, campus climate, and University mission. Student participants spend Saturday night in the residence halls with GU student hosts, and the weekend is jam-packed with activities that showcase what it truly means to be a Zag!

When is GEL Weekend 2014?

GEL Weekend is a two-day event that begins on Saturday, April 12 and ends on Sunday, April 13. Students should plan on arriving on campus between 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturday and may schedule morning and early-afternoon departures on Sunday.

Hope to see you there!

Who attends GEL?

High school seniors who have been accepted for fall enrollment at Gonzaga University for the 2014-2015 academic year are invited to register for GEL Weekend*. We also invite parents of admitted students to join us for the Parent Program*. Over half of our student participants attend GEL with a parent.

*Registration may reach capacity prior to GEL Weekend, so please register prior to making travel arrangements..

How can I get to campus?

We offer free shuttles to and from the airport and bus/train stations for participants who are traveling without other means of transportation. Shuttles are available throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, but it is most convenient if your schedule allows you to arrive in Spokane between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. (Saturday, April 12). GEL events begin at 10:00 a.m., and we'd like you to experience all that you can! Please try your best to arrive before 1:00 p.m. on Saturday; the Opening Ceremony kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and you'll want to be in attendance. Please be sure to provide us with your most up-to-date travel information on the online registration form.

Sunday's activities are optional and shuttles will be running back to the airport as needed. We also offer shuttle service to nearby hotels for Day-Only students and parents staying at local hotels on Saturday night.

*Please note that if you plan to arrive in Spokane on Friday, April 11, transportation and accommodations are not provided.

What should I pack?

Since you'll be spending the night in a residence hall with GU students (if you are registered as an Overnight Student), you likely won't have a bed available to you. Student participants should plan on bringing a sleeping bag and pillow for Saturday night. Also, be mindful of the fact that the weather in April can be very unpredictable! You should plan on bringing clothes appropriate for cooler weather and you'll want a jacket for the late-night activities. GEL students spend most of the weekend on their feet, so be sure to pack comfortable shoes.

What do GEL students do?

GEL is designed to give prospective students an authentic glimpse of life at Gonzaga. Events begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and include club fairs, faculty-led class sessions, performances, and even a kickball game that concludes at 2:00 a.m. In order to best accommodate travel plans, Sunday's activities are optional and include brunch, Mass, t-shirt distribution, and more! We do our best to match participants with a freshman or sophomore GU host who is either interested in a similar field of study or has other interests in common. In addition to sharing their dorm rooms for the night, hosts join participants in the Saturday night activities and offer great insight into student life. In the coming months, be sure to check back for a tentative student schedule!

What do GEL parents do?

The GEL Parent Program begins at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12. Events include a presentation by the University President, Dr. Thayne McCulloh, a faculty meet-and-greet, a student panel, and Q&A sessions with administrators and academic deans. About half of our student participants bring at least one parent! GU does not provide lodging for parents, but there are many hotels near campus that offer discounted GU rates.

How can I sign up?

Registration opens on February 1st, and will remain open until March 28, or until capacity is reached*.  Students may register on the Student Registration page of our website (there is a separate page for Parent Registration).  Students who have registered should mail or fax the Medical Release and Informed Consent forms, and pay the $45 student registration fee. You will need your Gonzaga student ID number (found in your acceptance packet) in order to complete registration.

*Overnight space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Gonzaga University reserves the right to close registration once capacity has been met.

Can I register before my flights are booked?

Registration is filled on a first-come, first-served basis and will be closed once capacity is met. Please be sure your registration is complete and confirmed before reserving flights. If you require transportation to and from the airport, please complete the "Update Travel Information" form by Tuesday, April 8.
