Weather Watch


The National Weather Service issues notices about predicted weather events. These include:

  • Watch: A notice that predictions indicate conditions are favorable within a 24-48 hour window for severe weather to occur in a specific area.
  • Advisory: A notice that predictions indicate conditions are favorable for severe weather within 12 hours
  • Warning: A notice that indicates severe weather is imminent or occurring.

Spokane is susceptible to a variety of severe winter weather conditions defined by the National Weather Service. Take notice of forecasts that include:

  • Heavy Snow: Accumulations of 4 inches or more in 12 hours, or 6 inches or more in 24 hours.
  • Blowing Snow: Wind-driving falling or accumulated snow that reduces visibility, possibly hampering travel.
  • Blizzard: Sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph or greater AND visibility of less than ¼ mile due to snow or blowing snow.
  • Freezing rain: rain or drizzle that freezes on surfaces.
  • High winds: hazardous wind events with sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph.
  • Wind Chill: very cold air and strong winds that can lead to frostbite and hypothermia.
