Risk Management In Action

“Let’s go Climb a Mountain”

Each summer Assistant Professor Adrian Popa takes a group of students to climb Mt. Adams as part of his “Leadership and Hardiness” graduate-level class.  In May of 2012 the Office of Risk Management and Adrian met to discuss the need to discuss and document issue’s related to climbing a mountain such as; clothing, food, personal protective gear, transportation, communications and pre-trip conditioning.  The resulting “Risk Management Plan” helped to solidify what was previously separate process’s or documents into one comprehensive planning and response document.

Due to the comprehensive work that Assistant Professor Popa has undertaken, his students, the University and the program itself is better able to manage the potential risks that they may encounter in this unique experiential class.  Adrian’s Risk Management Plan for his Leadership and Hardiness class can be viewed here.

Gonzaga’s Office of Risk Management helps programs such as this by conducting program reviews, assisting with coordination of review of waivers and releases and obtaining of communications tools such as satellite phones.  For risk management assistance with your academic program, contact Joe Madsen, Risk Manager at 313-6445.
