GEL Weekend

Frequently Asked Questions

GEL Weekend!

1 . What is GEL Weekend?^

Gonzaga Experience Live, affectionately referred to as "GEL Weekend," is an annual preview event for high school seniors who have earned acceptance to the University. The weekend gives prospective students and their families the opportunity to experience the best that Gonzaga and Spokane have to offer, including our academic programs, campus climate, and University mission. Student participants spend Saturday night in the residence halls with GU student hosts, and the weekend is jam-packed with activities that showcase what it truly means to be a Zag!

2 . When is GEL Weekend 2013?^

GEL Weekend is a two-day event that begins on Saturday, April 20 and ends on Sunday, April 21. Students should plan on arriving on campus between 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Saturday and may schedule morning and early-afternoon departures on Sunday.

Hope to see you there!

3 . Who attends GEL?^

All high school seniors who have been accepted for fall enrollment at Gonzaga University for the 2013-2014 academic year are invited to register for GEL Weekend. We also invite parents of admitted students to join us for the Parent Program. Over half of our student participants attend GEL with a parent.

4 . How can I get to campus?^

We offer free shuttles to and from the airport and bus/train stations for student participants who are traveling without parents or rental cars. Shuttles are available throughout the day on Saturday and Sunday, but it is most convenient if your schedule allows you to arrive in Spokane around 10:00 a.m. (Saturday, April 20). GEL events begin at 10:00 a.m., and we'd like you to experience all that you can! Please try your best to arrive before 1:30 p.m. on Saturday; the Opening Ceremony kicks off at 2:00 p.m. and you'll want to be in attendance. Please be sure to provide us with your most up-to-date travel information on the online registration form.

Sunday's activities are optional and shuttles will be running back to the airport as needed. We also offer shuttle service to nearby hotels for Day-Only students and parents staying at local hotels on Saturday night.

*Please note that if you plan to arrive in Spokane on Friday, April 19, transportation and accommodations are not provided.

5 . What should I pack?^

Since you'll be spending the night in a residence hall with GU students, you likely won't have a bed available to you. Student participants should plan on bringing a sleeping bag and pillow for Saturday night. Also, be mindful of the fact that the weather in April can be very unpredictable! You should plan on bringing clothes appropriate for cooler weather and you'll want a jacket for the late-night activities. GEL students spend most of the weekend on their feet, so be sure to pack comfortable shoes.

6 . What do GEL students do?^

GEL is designed to give prospective students an authentic glimpse of life at Gonzaga. Events begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday and include club fairs, faculty-led class sessions, concerts, and even a kickball tournament that concludes at 2:00 a.m. In order to best accommodate travel plans, Sunday's activities are optional and include brunch, Mass, t-shirt distribution, and a GU home baseball game! We do our best to match participants with a freshman or sophomore GU host who is either from the same hometown or is interested in a similar field of study. In addition to sharing their dorm rooms for the night, hosts join participants in the Saturday night activities and offer great insight into student life. In the coming months, be sure to check back for a tentative student schedule!

7 . What do GEL parents do?^

**We have reached capacity and Parent registration is now closed.

The GEL Parent Program begins at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 20. Events include faculty meet-and-greets, a student panel, and Q&A sessions with administrators and academic deans. About half of our student participants bring at least one parent! GU does not provide lodging for parents, but there are many hotels near campus that offer discounted GU rates.

8 . How can I sign up?^

**We have reached capacity and registration is now closed.

Students who have registered should mail or fax the Medical Release and Informed Consent forms, and pay the $45 student registration fee. You will need your Gonzaga student ID number (found in your acceptance packet) in order to complete registration.
