Elementary School Outreach

For the past decade, Gonzaga University's elementary science outreach program, Science in Action!, has been teaming up science majors and pre-service teachers with local K-6 classrooms to do weekly science experiments that align with the district curriculum and Next Generation Science Standards.

SIA! Lessons & Activities

Science in Action! lessons and activities follow the 5E model of science instruction and are designed to emphasize a hands-on, inquiry-based approach for elementary students. SIA! activities range from altering the density of salt water to make an egg float, to student-directed investigations into engineering design of an aluminum cargo boat or a balloon rocket. Lessons explore each field of science and can range from investigating how constellations work to using microscopes and culture plates to examine the microscopic world of fungi. Most activities not only emphasize the scientific content being learned in the classroom, but also the process of science itself.
