Materials Management Department description
The Materials Management department is responsible for acquiring new library materials, preparing them for placement on the shelves, and maintaining the periodicals and serials collection. The Acquisitions Unit orders, receives, and pays for library materials. Acquisitions staff add records to the Foley Center's on-line catalog for materials which are on order. They also coordinate the selection of gifts donated to the library. Once received and paid for, new materials are routed to the Cataloging Unit. Cataloging staff search an international database to obtain cataloging records. They review records for accuracy and add holdings to the database so that other libraries will know which materials are contained in the Foley Center collection. The cataloging records are then loaded into the Foley Center's on-line catalog. Cataloging staff physically process the materials and deliver them to the Public Services department for shelving. The Serials Unit is responsible for maintaining subscriptions and standing orders for materials such as magazines, scholarly journals, newspapers, government documents, and microforms. Serials staff also check in current issues of periodicals and prepare them for binding. They bind some volumes in-house in the Bindery located on the lower level of the Foley Center; they ship other volumes to a bindery outside of the Spokane area. Government Documents Processing: As a depository library, the Foley Center is responsible for maintaining collections of both state and federal government documents. The Materials Management staff process, check in, and catalog these documents which are then housed on the 1st floor of Foley.

Student Employment Opportunities
The Foley Library is one of the main student employers on campus - employing over 90 students each semester. The Materials Management Department provides employment opportunities to both Federal Workstudy and Institutional students. We rely on our student employees in all areas of the Department: Acquisitions, Cataloging, End-Processing, Government Documents, and Serials. Students find that in addition to earning money, they gain valuable skills and work experience while employed here. Robert Burr, former Dean of the Library, has said about our student employees:

We expect (the student's) work experience to be of lasting value. Students will come to understand what it means to work in a service-oriented organization, and will develop people skills that will aid them throughout their careers. They will develop technical skills that will give them a jump-start in their chosen profession. They will develop a resume that should impress prospective employers as well as graduate school admissions officers. They will develop personal relationships with student worker colleagues and our staff that will be important to them in the years ahead.
