Functionality

Will students be able to customize e-mail homepage backgrounds?
Currently, users are not able to customize the backgrounds of their new ZagMail accounts. This option may be available in the future.

E-mails from some Gmail accounts get filtered into junk mail. Will this happen with the new ZagMail?
All e-mail sent from ZagMail on Google will end with the extension @zagmail.gonzaga.edu. This will significantly reduce the likelihood of being filtered as junk mail.

Will I have access to the campus directory so I can find faculty or friend e-mail addresses?
At this time a Global Address List (aka GAL) is not available in ZagMail. This is due to the inability to guarantee the privacy of many of our students who wish not to be listed in the GAL. We are currently working to remediate this issue and should be able to provide a GAL in the near future.

Can I forward e-mail from/to my ZagMail account?
To forward ZagMail e-mail to another account...

  1. Log into ZagMail using your current ZagNet username and password.
  2. Click on settings in the upper right corner.
  3. Click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP.
  4. Select "Forward a copy of incoming mail to ..." and fill in the appropriate information.

_Can I import a contact list into my ZagMail account?
You can import contacts from Microsoft Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo!, and other services into your Contact list. To do so, first make sure your file is formatted as a CSV (Comma Separated Value). Then, access the contact manager and import your file by clicking Import on the right side.

Note: You can only import up to 3,000 contacts at a time. If you have more than 3,000 contacts, you'll need to create multiple CSV files and upload each individually.

Privacy and Permissions

Is there a way to keep my e-mail address private (unlisted)?
Yes, contact the IT Service Center at (509) 313-5550 to make a request. Students that request confidentiality through the Registrar’s Office will not be listed in the e-mail directory and is the best way to ensure enhanced privacy throughout Gonzaga. Alumni are not listed in the e-mail directory.

What password do I use? If I change it, will other services be affected?
Google uses your ZagNet username and password, which is username and password you use for Blackboard, the computer labs, and other network resources. If you change your password through the new ZagMail, it will change your ZagNet account password which is used for almost all network services.

Advanced Functionality

Can ZagMail accounts log users in to other services?
Users can only access the services listed above with their new ZagMail account. Some services such as Google Blogger, Labs, etc. will not be available to users through ZagMail login.

Why won’t my old e-mail in ZagMail be migrated to ZagMail on Google?
Many existing ZagMail accounts have accumulated a significant amount of old e-mail and/or spam. Rather than migrating e-mail messages that may not be useful, we are leaving it to students and alumni to determine what is important in their old ZagMail accounts in order to keep their new ZagMail on Google account cleaner. A student may contact the IT Support Center at (509) 313-5550 and request that their entire mailbox be migrated. This migration may take up to a week to be completed.

Can I send attachments? Is there a size limit?
Yes, you can send attachments. With ZagMail, you can send and receive messages up to 25 megabytes (MB) in size. Please note that you may not be able to send larger attachments to contacts who use other e-mail services with smaller attachment limits.

Can I change the way my name appears on outgoing e-mail?
Yes, you can go into the Accounts tab in the Google Mail Settings and alter how your name will be displayed. Keep in mind that this is will alter how your name will be displayed when you communicate with your professors.

Can I set up filters using this account?
Yes.

  1. Log into ZagMail using your current ZagNet username and password.
  2. Click on settings in the upper right corner.
  3. Click on Filters and create a new filter.

How is spam handled in ZagMail?
Google maintains its own sophisticated anti-spam solution for all of their GMail accounts. This system is maintained by Google and cannot be altered by Gonzaga staff. Any e-mail coming from Gonzaga to a ZagMail address is automatically trusted to ensure that you can effectively communicate with your professors.

Other

Why did Gonzaga choose to use Google?

If a user already has a Gmail account, they will simply have two Google accounts. Users can either keep their accounts separate or forward one account to the other.

Will GU faculty and staff have ZagMail accounts?
