Reference and Information Services

Librarians and Library Staff provide reference and information assistance at the Reference Desk on the Main Floor of Foley Center. Located near the front entrance to the building, the reference desk is staffed all hours that the library is open. For assistance by telephone, please call (509) 313-5931.

The Reference Collection

The Foley Library houses over 13,000 reference sources. Among the collection are encyclopedias, dictionaries, handbooks, statistical materials, and other standard reference sources. Reference books with call numbers A-L are on the East Side of the desk, and books M-Z are located West of the desk. The Foley Center also has available a number of Online Reference E-Books that can be viewed at netlibrary.com.

In addition, the library provides access to a number of web-based resources which are available from any on-campus computer and also from off-campus with an authentication login. Among these are online encyclopedias, reference sources and a number of electronic resources which are accessible by using the library's Indexes and Databases. These online resources also include the full-text of manymagazine, journal and newspaper articles which are available electronically.

Reference Requests Via E-Mail

Requests for information, research and reference assistance can be made via e-mail by sending a message to refdesk@gonzaga.eduand a librarian will respond to your question(s). Requests will usually be processed within 24 hours. Please supply as much information as possible in order to enable our librarians to more closely meet your information needs.

Virtual Reference Via Online Chat

Librarians are also available to answer questions via chat reference. Just click on the Human Click Chat Icon from the library's web pages and a reference librarian at Foley will respond to your question(s).If no librarian is available to chat with you immediately, you will be able to automatically send your question via e-mail by filling out the form generated. Other Services

There are over 20 Internet-accessible terminals located near the Reference desk on the First Floor of the Library.Patrons can use these to search library catalogs and databases, explore the internet or use any products in the Microsoft Office suite such as Word, PowerPoint or Access.In addition, a wireless network is available throughout the Foley Center for students who have laptops with a wireless card. If you need assistance in gaining access to the wireless network, please contactDesktop Support Services on the lower level of Foley or call the Help Desk at (509) 313-5550. Foley Center also has laptops available to checkout for use in the library. Printing is available from any computer in the library, and copy cards are available at the Circulation Desk for a nominal fee. Copy services, including a wide range of duplication services as well as faxes and photo processing is available from Paw Prints which is located on the lower level of the Foley Center near the Periodicals Desk.

Popular books and movies on VHS and DVD are also available in the library and located near the reference desk. Other special collections in the Reference area include a collection of compact discs, a map collection, historical and contemporary atlases, a pamphlet file with information specific to the Northwest, the oversize books and a documents from federal agencies and departments.
