After six years and several changes of major, I finally got my BA in English from the University of Oregon. That’s where my library career began. I was a work-study student: shelving books, filing book orders, waking up sleepers when it was time to close the library. I then worked for four years in the library at Portland Community College, before heading off to grad school at the University of Denver. That year was a blast, let me tell you! I worked as hard as I partied and earned my Master’s degree in Librarianship and Information Management.
While still at DU, I was offered a job at Minot State University. It was an adventure! I fell in love with North Dakota (if not that job) and eventually ended up as the Reference Librarian at Minot Public Library for seven years. I’ve worked at Gonzaga since November 1998 and have been in my current position as Distance Services Librarian since August 2003. I enjoy helping our distant students discover the value of the online library. I even get to continue having adventures, traveling to exotic places in Canada to deliver on-site library instruction. How cool is that?
Away from the library and whenever I can fit it into my schedule, I indulge myself in my main vice and true passion: Community Theatre! My husband and I met at an audition for Mouse River Players in Minot. In 2001 we started the Mule Days Melodrama in Reardan, WA. We also produce plays at church and I currently serve on the Board of Directors for Ignite! Community Theatre in Spokane. While most of my involvement these days is directing, in spring of 2007 it was my pleasure to appear as Sr. Aloysius in Gonzaga’s Reader’s Theater production of Doubt by John Patrick Shanley. You can also see me in the locally-filmed Mozart and the Whale doing “my” laundry.
Though I’m disciplining myself to read more non-fiction lately, I mostly read for fun. My current list of favorite authors includes: Jasper Fforde, Jan Karon, Lisa Scottoline and JK Rowling. I’ll also admit to enjoying Christopher Moore’s The Stupidest Angel and an occasional Dirk Pitt novel by Clive Cussler.
Recent reads:
Killer Smile by Lisa Scottoline
The absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie (excellent young adult novel!)
Misquoting Jesus: the story behind who changed the Bible and why by Bart D Ehrman
