It is with great sadness that we announce that our colleague and friend for many years, Dr. Juan Bala, passed away April 23, 2009. Following his diagnosis with cancer in January, Juan had been through several hospitalizations, support from a local hospice and a lengthy stay at home.
Juan earned his Bachelors of Science and Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Philippines and his doctoral degree from The University of Akron in Ohio. Juan was an avid sports fan. He enjoyed watching all the Gonzaga Sports teams at all their events. Juan loved spending time with his family and taking road trips across the country.
One of Juan's greatest enjoyments was being a teacher and advisor. He was loved by his students and admired by those he knew during his 20 years at Gonzaga University as a Professor of Electrical Engineering. Juan had been a faculty advisor to many award winning student and technical papers. He co-authored an engineering textbook entitled "Electromechanical Energy Devices and Power Systems" and has consistently been involved in technical committees and societies. Juan partook in many different Honor Student events and competitions.
Our School and University are diminished by his loss, and we ask for you to keep his wife, Teresita, his children, and his extended family in your prayers during this most difficult of times.
