Mechanical 13 - Winch Drum Design & Analysis
Student Team: Samuel Oyen, Dane Goodman, Anthony Armstrong, Mitchell Heesacker
Advisor: Bob Stiger
Sponsoring Organization: WinchEngineer Group
Liaison: George Moore
This project will develop a design for a drum for a tension controlled battery-electric winch and as such is a key component of a larger project that implements a prototype for new method for launching sailplanes. This new method will demonstrate improved performance and increased safety over current internal combustion engine driven winch technology. The drum will hold approximately 2 km of UltraHigh Molecular Weight PolyEthylene (UHMWPE) cable operating under as much as 10,000 N tensions generating immense hoop stress in the drum. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) will be the principle design tool employed. Reducing weight and angular inertia are important criteria. The design is required to be simple to fabricate primarily by welding from metal plate material. Computer controlled (e.g. laser) cutting packages will be deliverables. The project will target a specified drum dimension set but other winch implementations will require differently dimensioned drums. The analysis and manufacturing file generation will be parameterizable to simplify adaption to other winch requirements.
Deliverables will include the FEA analyses, the computer aided manufacturing programs, and fabrication instructions.
Project Management and Communication Expectations:
Liaison will provide system level requirements for the drum. Project requirements would be established early in the school year and tasks and schedule defined. Liaison will nominally meet weekly with design team for coordination and will be available during interim periods to address arising issues. There will opportunities to interact with other experienced, senior engineers involved in the larger winch development project.
Design documents and analysis of earlier drum designs will be used as a starting point. Project outputs will become publicly available open source code.
