Project Background:

This is a continuation of the 2012/2013 CPSC 01 Parkinson's Project.  That project team demonstrated proof-of-concept and produced a prototype device to alert users when their speaking volume has dropped below a preset level. The team also suggested that further work might best use a two-track approach-one to further develop hardware and the second for software.  Please see the attached 2012/2013 Proposal form for additional information on the original project goals and deliverables.  The current proposal addresses primarily the hardware or clinical track.

Project Goal:

By the end of the academic year, develop, evaluate and modify a device that will be clinically functional for both the speech-language pathologist and usable by the patient in their day-to-day environment.. The original project goals still apply and they are:  The device "...should be adjustable within a defined range, e.g., 50 to 80 db.  Ideally, the device will alert only the user and it should be small and lightweight enough to be carried on the user's person.  The device should respond only to the user's voice and not to other persons or to ambient noises.   While the device should allow a speech-language pathologist to make adjustments, it would ideally require minimal user input, preferably only switching on or off."

Project Deliverables:

1. Project plan delineating milestones, deliverables, and working budget (first month).

2. Starting with the prototype device, select the best sensor and alerting approaches.

3. Modify the prototype to be less conspicuous and to produce a device for minimal cost and maximal ease of use and portability.

4. Field test the device with a minimum of 10 Parkinson's subjects.*

5. Based upon user feedback, make modifications to the device.

  For Item 4, the project sponsors will be responsible for developing informed consent forms and getting institutional review board approval.


Project Management and Communication Expectations:

1. WBS, project schedule and HoQ to be determined.

2. Monthly meetings with sponsors.

3. Status reports every two weeks.

Project Research:

Development of a device that achieves the project goals.

The project team must interact with the software team, if any, as required.  Sponsors will provide subjects for evaluating the device at all stages of development as needed.
