How do my VA Benefits work at Gonzaga?

VA Education Benefits may look different in how they are applied from school to school.  Especially, if you are comparing a public institution to a private institution like Gonzaga.  The VA.gov website is an excellent source of information, but it may be hard to understand how these benefits operate at Gonzaga.  Please examine the section below that relates to your benefit type to see how it looks at Gonzaga University.  First, review the definitions of some key terminology that is used across all benefit types.

Definitions

Term – A term refers to the actual listed dates of the course.  A term could be for an entire semester, but could also be just a portion of the semester. A standard semester is typically 16 weeks long (15 weeks for Law School).

Rate of Pursuit – The rate of pursuit is the time status of a student based on the number of credits being pursued within a term.  The VA calculates rate of pursuit by dividing the credit hours enrolled in a term by the number of credit hours considered to be full-time time for that term.  Credits for full-time status can vary depending on student level (undergraduate, graduate, law) and term (16-week term, 8-week term, 3-day term).  Please contact the SCO if you need any further information.

Progress Toward Degree – The VA will only certify the credits for benefits that give progress toward a declared program of study. Sorry, the VA will not pay for 12 credits of Underwater Basketweaving!  That does not mean you cannot take excess credits outside of your field of study, but you may be responsible for payment of those courses.
