OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

Gonzaga University School of Law actively cultivates a vibrant and resilient community that values the dignity of all its members and fosters their personal and professional growth. We recognize diversity, equity and inclusion as cornerstones of social and economic justice, and we seek to intentionally build a community that welcomes those who have been historically excluded from the legal profession.

Journey to your J.D.

We are often asked: “What is Gonzaga Law known for?”

The answer is, quite honestly, producing strong, well-rounded J.D. candidates that are ready to practice law in their chosen area. Our faculty and staff are prepared to support you as you discover your area of focus. Each year, we produce exemplary candidates in Human Rights, Intellectual Property, Environmental Law and everything in between. We’re not in the business of assigning you to a “track.” We are in the business of investing in humans to become the best versions of themselves for others.

What will you learn at Gonzaga Law?

To think deeper, argue more persuasively, collaborate more intensely and pour your passion into your study of the law. We offer two challenging, fully accredited J.D. program tracks, each with multiple pathways to your area focus allowing you to customize your studies. Each pathway is rigorously designed and taught by expert faculty to prepare you for the Uniform Bar Exam, land a career that makes a genuine difference in the lives of others and practice at the top of your profession.

DISCERN YOUR FOCUS Experiential Learning

At Gonzaga Law, you are not alone as you discern your future. A law degree is not a checkpoint on your life’s journey; it is the doorway to your vocation. As part of your academic course of study, you will have many opportunities to gain experience in a variety of different settings. These experiences are the practical backbone of your legal education and the place where you will begin building your professional experience and your own personal network.

Center For Professional Development and Externship Program (CPDEx)

Beginning as early as the summer before your 1L year, you will have an opportunity to begin meeting with our CPDEx team to talk about your interests, both short- and long-term. Our team of four professional attorneys is your go-to resource for exploring all the career opportunities your J.D. will open for you. From job postings, interviews and networking events, to offering detailed assistance to sharpen your resume, cover letters and interviewing skills, CPDEx supports you every step of the way.

Academic Centers

Our Center for Civil & Human Rights (CCHR) and Center for Law Ethics and Commerce (CLEC) exist to supplement your more formal internship or externship experience with multiple programmed or ad hoc opportunities to learn about your chosen area of focus. Our centers each house multiple legal clinics and offer slates of programming to explore the law in a variety of settings.

CCHR: Gonzaga Law is deeply committed to solving complex systemic problems and creating lasting, meaningful change. Our Interdisciplinary CCHR focuses on the law as an essential tool in the ongoing fight for equity. The CCHR creates opportunities to learn how race influences criminal justice, advance border justice for immigrants, work on sealing juvenile records and provide legal services to people of moderate means who might not otherwise have access to counsel.

gonzaga.edu/law/cchr

CLEC: CLEC helps students explore the law as it relates to business, technology and innovation—and how each can be advanced in ways that are as good for a company as they are for humanity. As a student, you can participate in a national project affecting outcomes in commercial law issues; learn from experts about privacy, technology, regulation and social media; and work directly with clients through the Business Innovation Clinic and the Federal Tax Law Clinic.

BE YOUR BEST

Support Resources

At Gonzaga Law, balance matters and is encouraged in our students. You will regularly hear the phrase Cura Personalis. Rooted in our Jesuit mission, this translates to “care for the whole person,” and it’s a tenet that drives everything that we do.

We believe that we have a responsibility to help each of our students grow in mind, body and spirit—to become a person of intelligence and integrity, strength and humility, courage and compassion. To help you fulfill your purpose as the best student, attorney, community member and human you can be, we offer many campus resources to support your needs and goals.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS PROGRAM

The Academic Success Program (A.S.P.) houses our academic support and bar preparation team. In service to our mission, all new 1Ls take a course called Professional and Academic Foundations (ProFound) during your 1L year to springboard the skills you need to be successful in law school.

To further develop those skills, Gonzaga Law has partnered with BARBRI a global legal education support provider. This partnership provides access to preparation materials, discounted courses and diagnostic check-ins throughout your entire law school journey.

Additionally, the A.S.P. houses our Smitty Teaching Fellows. Our Smittys are 2L and 3L peer advisors who provide mentoring and coaching as you navigate your first year of law school.

LAW SCHOOL MINISTRY

Regardless of your faith tradition, the Law School’s chaplain can support you in your spiritual journey.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

Our Student Affairs team builds a culture of community at Gonzaga Law. This looks as diverse as trivia nights in the Chastek Library, a petting zoo before finals or simply connecting you with campus resources to help meet your need at any moment. Gonzaga Law students have access to all student resources at Gonzaga University, including our on-campus Health and Counseling Center, Disability resource office, wellnessfocused workshops and more.

“When your faculty go out of their way to know you as an individual outside of your identity as a student, that’s not something you’ll find at other law schools. This is a pretty unique culture. The faculty want to see you succeed as an individual.”

- KATIE HANDICK (’23)

In addition to providing you with plenty of inspiration, the Zag Law alumni network can also help you further your career goals, connect to internships and employment openings and get involved in mentoring the next generation of law students.
