Mechanical 1 - HVAC Coil Loader

Student Team: John Oven, Christopher Benshoof, Will Tiedemann, Nathan Greene
Advisor: Taylor Wagemans
Sponsoring Organization: Haakon Industries, Ltd.

Haakon Industries specializes in building large-scale air handling units that have a vast number of applications ranging from general use to maintaining clean rooms to food processing areas. These units have different requirements for size, efficiency and serviceability. Regardless of application, every unit will contain either heating or cooling coils. Whether the desire is to heat or cool air, this is the area of the unit where the heat transfer takes place. In some instances these coils can weigh upwards of 2,200 lbs. Due to certain limitations, current installation methods require up to twelve workers to push the large coils in from the side. This method places both the workers and the product at risk, and can also be very time consuming. This year’s challenge is to pick up where last year’s team left off and redesign and produce a completely operational mechanical coil-loading unit.
