FAQs

Gonzaga Cheerleading Frequently Asked Questions
1 . What is required of our members?^
GU Cheerleaders are required to attend all scheduled practices, workout sessions, promotional appearances, and perform at all home Men’s and Women’s Basketball games. In addition, they appear at other university events, such as GEL and Freshmen Orientation, and perform community service.
2 . What is the time commitment involved with Gonzaga Cheerleading?^
On average, cheerleaders spend 15 – 20 hours per week performing at games, working out, or practicing. Based on those selected, the coach will create a practice schedule that accommodates each member’s course schedule. Before basketball season begins, the team practices three to four times a week with each session lasting two to three hours. During regular season, the team will practice two times per week. On non-practice days, members follow a prescribed work out. As an opportunity to improve skills and build team camaraderie, Cheerleaders may attend a three-day summer cheer camp mid-August.
3 . Do you have open tryouts or practices?^
No. For safety and privacy, all practices are closed to spectators. If you are a prospective student visiting the university, contact the coach to arrange an appointment to view and meet the team.
4 . How many cheerleaders make up the team?^
There are 16 members of the Cheerleading team: 8 females, 8 males. However, only 12 team members are designated to travel for post-season play such as the WCC and NCAA tournaments. In the event of an injury or unavoidable absence, any of the four members originally not designated to travel may fill-in needed positions at the coach’s discretion.
5 . Do you offer cheerleading scholarships?^
No. Cheerleading is not considered a scholarship sport at GU. In place of this, Gonzaga Athletics pays for uniforms, equipment, and some travel expenses.
6 . Does Gonzaga participate in cheerleading competitions?^
The Gonzaga University Cheerleading Team is not a competition team. Our Primary focus is to support Athletics through crowd involvement, performances, and serving the Gonzaga community.
7 . Is there anything else I should know about Gonzaga Cheerleading?^
In lieu of recent college cheerleading safety restrictions, skills requiring the use of mats on the basketball court are not permissible for GU Cheerleaders (i.e. basket tosses, or two-and-a-half high pyramids). Hence, crowd leading, partner stunting, dance, and gymnastics skills are heavily emphasized. Please refer to section G: Specific Basketball/Indoor Court Rules of the 2007-2008 AACCA College Cheerleading Safety Rules.
