TECHNOLOGY BASICS FOR DISTANT STUDENTS
Technology Basics for Gonzaga’s Distant Student
Help Desk: If you have any problems or questions about technology services at Gonzaga, please call the Help Desk at ext. 5550 or email helpdesk@gonzaga.edu. The Help Desk is located in AD028 in the basement of the Administration Building and is open Mon-Thurs from 8:00 AM– 6:30 PM and Friday from 8:00am – 4:30pm.
Zagmail: Zagmail is another name for the email service available to Gonzaga students via a web interface at http://zagmail.gonzaga.edu. You log into you Zagmail account with your GU username and password. Call the Help Desk at ext. 5550 if you do not know your Zagmail username and password.
Zagweb: Zagweb is the student self-service web interface to the campus information system at http://zagweb.gonzaga.edu. On Zagweb you can pay your bill via credit card or e-check, register for classes, add and drop classes, view your grades, course schedule and your financial aid awards. Log onto Zagweb by using your Student ID # and PIN #.
Blackboard: Blackboard is an online learning system used by many faculty in teaching their courses here at Gonzaga. Blackboard is software that is used to enhance (and sometimes replace) the normal classroom environment providing discussion boards, file sharing, and communication between faculty and students. Blackboard uses the same username and password as Zagmail. Access: http://blackboard.gonzaga.edu
Student File and Web Storage: Each Gonzaga student is provided with 200MB of document storage on Barney, the Academic File Server. This storage includes documents created in the computer labs, web pages, and your e-mail (Zagmail mail is stored on Barney). Documents stored on Barney can also be accessed from anywhere you have Internet access by typing into your browser address bar: ftp://your-username@barney.gonzaga.edu. Be sure to change your-username with your username. Example for William Shakespeare: ftp://wshakesp@barney.gonzaga.edu
Barney is backed up nightly (e-mail is backed up weekly) to protect your data. Please respect the space constraints and do not store MP3 files, movies, copyrighted items, or large photo archives on Barney; they can and will be removed as required to allow sufficient storage space for all users.
Library Access via the Web: The Foley library catalog and thousands of other online academic resources are available online by going to http://www.foley.gonzaga.edu.
Campus Computer Labs: Information Technology Services maintains the only general purpose 24 hour student computer lab on campus, located on the 2nd floor of the Administration Building in Room AD243. More than a dozen other computer labs on campus are located in each academic school and primarily support students within their particular curriculum. Lab access is also available in the Foley Library. The computer labs use the same username and password as Zagmail and Blackboard.
Wireless access on Campus: Wireless access is available in many buildings on campus including the Crosby Student Center, Foley Library, the School of Engineering (Herak Center), School of Education (Rosauer Center), Professional Studies (Schoenberg Center), the School of Business (Jepson Center), Cataldo Dining Hall, the Law School, and parts of the Administration Building. Wireless network cards are available for purchase from the Help Desk for $30-$40 (check only).
Anti-virus software
Gonzaga University does not require any specific anti-virus software, however, the University recommends purchasing an anti-virus package with an automatic update feature such as Symantec, McAfee, Panda, Sophos, Trend Micro or AVG. AVG is free and provides regular updates. The University does require that on-campus students maintain and regularly update their anti-virus systems. Please purchase a subscription to the software vendor’s automated update system and configure the computer to automatically update the software. Anti-virus software is available for purchase in the University Bookstore.
How do I update and maintain my operating system?
If you are using a computer running Windows, use Windows Update which is available at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/. If you are using a Macintosh computer, ensure that the Software Update feature is enabled on your system (Mac OS X systems only.)
Computer Repair for Students: The Computer Repair Guys (an outside vendor) is located on campus in the basement of the Crosby Student Center in Room 009, ext. 5927. They provide hardware and software assistance such as removing viruses, worms and spyware from your computer, installing new software, and troubleshooting general problems. Gonzaga staff do not work on student computers, but will assist with connectivity issues in the residence halls. Call the Help Desk at ext. 5550 for more information.
