Project Background:

The Lake Roosevelt Fisheries Program with the Spokane Tribe of Indians runs a collaborative effort to protect and restore a robust fishery within Lake Roosevelt. One aspect of this collaboration is a reservoir wide creel program that monitors and evaluates angler catch success rates. We currently use a creel model specifically developed for a limited budget and available man hours. The “Fishbox” idea was born out of a desire to increase data collection in a more affordable and angler friendly method that would provide wider coverage of the 600+ shoreline miles of Lake Roosevelt.

The Fishbox will be able to automate data collection including species identification, species count and presence of passive integrated transponders (PIT Tags). Additional, a user interface will be needed to collected angler information including zip code, fishing start time, fishing end time, target species, number and species of fish released, user information, time-lapse video recording.

Project Deliverables:

The project team will work with the tribal liaisons to deliver:

1.     A project plan that specifies project background, customer needs, preliminary target design specification, project phases and schedule, and finalized negotiated deliverables.

2.     Intermediate concept review with report.  The concept review will develop multiple alternative solutions, or components to solutions with sufficient technical description to support engineering tradeoffs.

3.     Agreed upon concept selection and budget following project liaison review and input briefing.

4.     Bench test proof of concept prototype design, fabrication and specifications document package, and working bench prototype.

5.     Final report that details engineering analysis so the project can be brought to a fully functional prototype in the following academic year.

Note: This is a two year project.  Year one will develop a concept and bench test a proof of concept model.  Year two will package a second revision of the prototype into a conventional kiosk-like device. 

Project Management and Communication Expectations:

1. WBS and schedule from start to finish. Updated monthly by the 15th and 30th.

2. One (1) visit to the Spokane Tribal Fish Hatchery and potential creel box siting location       (1-day).

3. Monthly in-person sponsor meetings at Gonzaga University

4. Weekly conference call for updates and questions/answer sessions.

Project Research:

The Lake Roosevelt Fisheries Program will provide team members with Numbered, Project Notebooks for all data recording, project notes, and record keeping.  Original notebook will be returned to the LRFP upon project completion, however, copies may be kept on file at GU.
