Program Director, Dr. Mark Derby, Ph.D.
The Special Education Lab for Applied Behavior Analysis in Spokane, WA serves children with mental disabilities from all over the inland northwest. Graduate and undergraduate students take advantage of the rare opportunity to participate in outpatient assessment and treatment, while working closely with faculty and a tight-knit group of student colleagues.
As a fundamental part of the experience, students perform traditional descriptive assessments. Working with faculty, the students use functional analysis to identify behavioral function. Students then develop treatment packages and implement them in the clinic throughout their degree program.
Completion of the functional analysis track in the M.Ed. program prepares students to take the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) exam. This allows them to serve as a practitioner, as an employee, or, with additional experience, to start an independent consulting practice. Students can also choose to obtain Washington state teacher certification. Students have an opportunity to complete required experience hours through the program with a faculty member holding BCBA certification.
At Gonzaga University, we follow the Jesuit tradition of being deeply committed to community service and development. Partnered with a compelling approach to behavioral analysis and faculty with extensive experience, research, and publishing credits, the program has nationally distinguished itself as a leader in special education.
More importantly, we provide results to struggling families:
- Our services are not available anywhere else in the inland northwest.
- The payment structure is flexible for families in financial need.
- Since 1999 we have successfully assessed and treated over 100 clients.
- Parents, teachers, and care workers easily apply the strategies in the child's natural environment.
