As a student in this program, you will complete both a practicum and internship in a K–12 school setting. The best part? You won’t need to find your own placement site! The School Counseling Program Director works closely with the program’s Professional Education Advisory Board (PEAB) – a committee of local education professionals, as well as nearby school districts to secure placements for students.
This placement process includes a brief interview with PEAB members, during which you’ll share your goals, strengths, areas for growth, and specific interests related to your internship. Following these interviews, the Program Director carefully reviews the information and committee feedback to begin identifying appropriate placements.
Gonzaga’s School Counseling Program has a strong reputation throughout the region, and practicum/internship students are welcomed and valued in their school communities. Students spend a full year and a half at their practicum/internship sites, offering a meaningful opportunity to become deeply embedded in the life of the school—building relationships with students, families, and staff alike. Because school counseling is a highly relational profession built on trust, this level of consistency and immersion leads to a rich and rewarding learning experience.
Our students have been placed in many local districts, including Spokane Public Schools, Cheney School District, Medical Lake School District, Freeman School District, Mead School District, East Valley School District, West Valley School District, Central Valley School District, Coeur d'Alene School District, and others. We are deeply grateful for our incredible community partners!
