Military and Veteran Stories

Over the past five years, staff have worked tirelessly to offer sustained social justice and identity-focused conversations. The hope with all of our dialogue programs is that students and facilitators will learn the skills of dialoguing across difference and build stronger understandings of identity. As a result of participation in Intergroup and Sustained Dialogue programs, students are better able to remain engaged in challenging issues and conversations as well as feel equipped with the skills to act in moments of injustice.

To support BSU and other students impacted by hate, there are many things we can do.

Gonzaga University School of Law welcomed 152 members to its class of 2023 onto campus this fall, making it the school's largest class since 2011 and the most diverse class in the school's history, with 27 percent of the class self-identifying as members of historically underrepresented racial/ethnic groups.

Author Christine Hassing used inspiration found in a student project to author the stories of 22 military veterans who have found hope in coping with PTSD thanks to their service dogs. Her book, "Hope with a Cold Nose," was to release on Veterans Day 2020.

The Gonzaga University Institute for Hate Studies has awarded its 2020 Eva Lassman Take Action Against Hate Awards to Leslie McAuley and the Spokane County Human Rights Task Force.

This summer, students in Gonzaga University's School of Leadership Studies shared their diverse perspectives and collective commitment to social justice in a remote immersion course titled "Leadership Strategies to Counter Hate." Designed for students in the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program, the course also featured students in the Doctoral Program in Leadership studies as co-instructors alongside Dr. Hoover, representing the inaugural offerings of the School of Leadership Studies Teaching Award and providing a rich, unique learning experience for all.
