Michael DeLand is an urban ethnographer specializing in the development and use of public spaces and parks. He's studied the contingencies and processes of racial integration in public park basketball games in Los Angeles and has written on ethnographic theory and methods. His research has appeared in the Annals of the Academy of Political and Social Science, Law & Society Review, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, and is forthcoming in Sociological Theory. He teaches introductory sociology, deviance, self and society, urban sociology, and sociological theory.
