About Charlene Teters

A member of the Spokane Nation and an artist, writer, educator, and activist, Charlene rose to national prominence as a graduate student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where she led protests against the degrading depictions of American Indian caricatures used as sport team’s mascots and was the subject of the award-winning documentary, In Whose Honor? by Jay Rosenstein. She has been honored as “Person of the Week” by ABC News and received a New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts. She currently serves as the Interim Dean of the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
