Forging Forward Concludes in Big Sky Country

Montana Zags Gather in Bozeman for the Final Stop of President Passerini's Tour

Against a backdrop of blue skies, mountain vistas and a longstanding tradition of Zag hospitality, Gonzaga University President Katia Passerini, Ph.D., concluded her Forging Forward Presidential Tour on Aug. 16 in Bozeman, Montana. The gathering, generously hosted by Tim ('73) and Mary Barnard at their home, brought together alumni, families, students, parents and friends from across the Montana Zag community for an afternoon of reflection, connection and celebration.

The Bozeman event marked the final stop of the nationwide Forging Forward tour, which has connected Gonzaga's far-reaching community through meaningful conversations about the University's future, its mission and the enduring impact of a Gonzaga education. It also continued a cherished tradition, as the Barnards have routinely welcomed Montana Zags to their home to gather for fellowship and community.

The afternoon began with Mass celebrated by Fr. C. Hightower, S.J. ('99). Set against Montana's stunning landscape, the service offered attendees an opportunity to come together in prayer and gratitude before the day's festivities.

President Passerini shared her appreciation for the Gonzaga community's swift and generous response to recent wildfire relief efforts, highlighting the compassion and service that remain hallmarks of the University's mission. She also spoke about her vision for Gonzaga's future, emphasizing opportunities to strengthen the University's impact while remaining grounded in the values that define the Zag experience.

Joining President Passerini were several Gonzaga leaders and volunteers, including Julie Wolter, Ph.D., dean of the School of Nursing & Human Physiology; Regents Andy Schneider and Chris Wrolstad and guest Lisa Wrolstad; and Student Regent Andrew Howison.

Following President Passerini's remarks, guests enjoyed a lunch and time to reconnect with fellow Zags old and new. Conversations flowed easily as alumni shared memories, incoming students discussed their excitement for the year ahead, and families strengthened their connections to the Gonzaga community.

A highlight of the afternoon was a raffle featuring a generous prize from WildRye Distillery, partly owned by Gonzaga Regent Bob McCambridge. Jon Barber ('05) was the lucky winner, adding an extra moment of celebration to the event.

Before the gathering concluded, attendees assembled for a group photo featuring both the Gonzaga and Montana flags, a fitting symbol of the strong connection between the University and the Montana Zag community. As guests lingered in the sunshine and mountain air, the spirit of the day reflected what Forging Forward has been about from the beginning: bringing people together through shared values, meaningful relationships and a collective commitment to Gonzaga's future.

As the tour comes to a close, the Bozeman gathering served as a reminder that no matter how far Zags travel from campus, the bonds of community, service and belonging remain strong.
