The world has begun to take notice of the importance of sustainability and it is our responsibility to harness as much green energy as possible. Piezoelectric technology relies on the piezoelectric effect to harvest energy from the vibrations in the surrounding environment. High activity areas, such as gyms, sports arenas, and entryways to busy office buildings have large amounts of vibrational energy lost to the environment which could be harnessed for other purposes. As a result, it was the job of the PiezoMat team to create a floor mat which collects electric energy from high foot traffic and high vibration areas. The team researched materials, power conditioning, power storage, and optimization of the system. To deal with these issues, the team conducted experiments to come up with the optimal design for the prototype.
