Political Science examines political thought and systems past and present, thus contributing to a liberal education, an education in citizenship, a solid basis for graduate work, and background for the study of law and the teaching or practice of politics. In their senior year, majors take POLS 499, "Preparation for the Comprehensive", reviewing their studies toward an individual, oral examination. The department also gives advice toward graduate work or legal studies.
For students planning careers in teaching or politics, in governmental administration, or in international affairs, advice is also available. Programmes for students working for secondary teacher certification leading either to primary endorsement in Political Science or merely a supporting endorsement are available. Majors are urged to take more than 31 credits, especially if considering graduate studies.
