FAQ's

ENVS Frequently Asked Questions:

1.        Is there an ENVS Major and Minor at Gonzaga?

Yes. Effective Fall 2009, Gonzaga has a regular Major and Minor in ENVS.

2.         I heard there was an ENVS Concentration, does that still exist?

No.  The Major and Minor have replaced the Concentration, with the exception of continuing students who are "grandfathered" in.

3.         I'm in the old ENVS Concentration, can I switch to the Major or the Minor?

Yes.  You can switch any time, though the requirements and Graduation Catalog will change.  You do NOT have to switch if you don't want to.

4.         I'm in the old ENVS Concentration but I'm considering the new ENVS Minor; what's the difference?

With the ENVS Concentration, you have to take ENVS 499 Senior year.  With the Minor you do not.  HOWEVER, with the Minor you can no longer double count ENVS 458/PHIL 458 - or any other 300 or 400 level course - with the Core.  So in essence, you are trading ENVS 499 for a 2nd 400-level PHIL course (and any other upper-division   courses you might have planned to double-count with the Core).

5.         What are the rules about double-counting courses with the Core and/or with 2nd Majors.

*          Any 100 and 200-level course may be double-counted between the ENVS Major or Minor and the Core.

*          300 and 400-level courses may not bet double-counted between the ENVS Major or Minor and the Core (there are a few exceptions to this rule for PHIL and RELI Majors/Minors - see those Departments for details).

*          There are no restrictions on double-counting courses between the ENVS Major and a 2nd Major or a Minor.

*          NOTE: these rules do NOT apply to the old ENVS Concentration, for the students  who were "grandfathered" in.

6.         I've heard you need to be in one of the ENVS programs (Concentration, Major, Minor) to get into ENVS courses. Is that accurate?

NO! There is no preference for ENVS students in ENVS courses.  Enrollment and registration are based solely on seniority (i.e., Seniors first, Juniors second) as with all registration at GU.

7.         I'm trying to get into an ENVS course and it shows spaces open, but when I try to register, it says the course closed.

This is a problem with ALL cross-listed courses, not just ENVS courses.  If a course has 10 spots on one side (e.g., ENVS) and 10 on the other side (e.g., POLS, SOCI, BIOL, etc.), it will always show the other side as "empty spots" even though they're full.  It's just an annoying fact of registration at GU.
