Undergraduate Research
Eighteenth Regional Conference on Undergraduate Research
Gonzaga University hosts more than 450 science students and faculty advisors from a dozen Pacific Northwest private colleges and universities October 30-31 for the 18th Regional Conference on Undergraduate Research of the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust’s College Science Research Program.
More information is available here.
Fall semester URA positions have now been awarded!
Thanks to all who applied, and congratulations to those who received a position. If you did not receive an URA position, but are still interested in having an independent research experience, please do not hesitate to contact a faculty member whose research interests you. There are many avenues for independent research, such as working for credit, volunteering or outside grants.
Summer Research Wrap-up
Once again, it has been a exciting summer for research in Hughes Hall. If the number of pizzas consumed at our weekly seminar lunch is any indication of productivity, it was a great summer for everyone.

For students interested in Fall 2009 URA positions, see the important dates below:
Applications available: Friday, August 28th
Applications due: Tuesday, September 8th
Awards announced: Thursday, September 10th
Begin work: Monday, September 14th

Program Description
Undergraduates in Gonzaga’s Biology and Chemistry/Biochemistry departments have the opportunity to enhance their college experience through independent research in a faculty mentor’s laboratory. Gonzaga’s HHMI supported programs in the sciences provide internships both over the summer and during the academic year for hands-on laboratory training.
For Biology majors, the Research Option provides research-interested students additional advising and research experiences, as well as additional classes in mathematics and participation in local outreach programs.
For Chemistry and Biochemistry majors, the Senior Thesis provides a year-long independent research project for students during their senior year.
Download degree guides/worksheets for both the Biology and Chemistry/Biochemistry majors here.

For students interested in applying for an Undergraduate Research Assistant (URA) position, please check to make sure the lab you’re interested in is accepting students (see Faculty Research Interests).
Funding for research projects is provided by a number of sources, including Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), Gonzaga University Summer Research Program (GSRP) and grants to individual faculty members.
In addition, research can be done for academic credits.
Undergraduate research has long been a tradition at Gonzaga. Just one example is chronicled here in an Science Connections article from 2004.
