Gonzaga provides excellent training for students in theatre performance, technical theatre and costume design. The major in Theatre Arts (45-47 credits) offers courses in all aspects of theatre production: acting, directing, dance, theatre history, technical theatre, stagecraft and scene, lighting and costume design. Students can also choose to specialize with either a performance or technical theatre endorsement.
The minor in Theatre Arts also offers a far-reaching curriculum but requires fewer courses and only one required course at the 300-level or higher.
Theatre students develop an attitude of professionalism and leadership throughout their classroom training with faculty and interaction with local theatre professionals. Internships are encouraged with local theatre and film companies. Guest artists are invited throughout the year including professional actors, screenwriters, casting directors, etc.
To promote the combination of service and theatre, main-stage productions have included performances for high schools and elementary schools in underserved areas and our students have taught classes for local students. The program also hosts professional workshops in all areas of theatre performance and production.
We are rooted in our history and mission of Gonzaga University. During the 15th century, the great Renaissance educator Vittorino da Feltre supervised the scholarship of the children of the noble House of Gonzaga in Castiglione delle Stiviere in northern Italy. From this family comes our patron saint and namesake, Aloysius Gonzaga. da Feltre incorporated dance into the education of the Gonzaga children to inspire physical grace and an appreciation of beauty.
Gonzaga University currently offers a minor in Dance. The program exposes students to a variety of styles and to the thrill of performance. Additionally, students experience the dynamic of teaching dance in an elementary after-school program. There are numerous student activities available beyond the classroom and our program continues to grown each year with exciting performances and professional faculty.
