This kind of grace...

Each September, the Mass of the Holy Spirit opens the year like sunrise over the spires—quiet light, fresh air and a deep breath. This year’s, which took place earlier this week, held two moments worth tucking in your pocket.

First, a colleague shared a doorway story: while welcoming people at the church steps, she noticed a woman in athletic shorts, a T-shirt and a baseball hat pause at the bottom stair—curious and tentative. In a whisper: “I don’t speak English—Ukraine.” She pointed toward the open door as if to ask, “may I?” A worship aid was offered with a big smile and a gentle nod to her next question—“is okay?”—and across the threshold she went. When Mass began, the woman stood at the back, the wonder in her eyes softening into comfort. Home, for a moment. All are welcome here.

Second, President Katia Passerini served—for the first time—as a eucharistic minister, placing the body of Christ in students’ hands and tracing blessings over bright, nervous faces. Later she said, with that unmistakable humility, “Who am I to bless?” Somehow, her question became the ultimate blessing.

Support from people like you make room for this kind of grace. Formation unfolds in lecture halls and labs, in late-night study sessions and early-morning practices, in chapels and clinics and courts. Philanthropy contributes to nurturing minds, strengthening hearts and cultivating care for the whole person. Students carry that care into friendship, leadership and service.

Thank you for believing in them. Thank you for giving what money cannot buy—belonging, purpose and hope. Gratitude for you runs deep at the start of this new year.
