Professor Donaway's research is interested in political communication. Her work considers what forms political information take, what it looks like, and what users choose to do with the information, such as engage or disengage in the political process. Recent projects have considered the effects of emoji in news; affective reactions to political information; and partisan messaging during the 2020 election.

Her work has been published in Mass Communication & Society, Environmental Communication, and Public Opinion Quarterly.
