Seattle
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Seattle, Washington)
A summer research program for undergraduate students between their junior and senior year of studies is established at the Hutchinson Center. The program provides financial support and instruction on a research project under the guidance of a faculty member and laboratory staff (in one of the Divisions of the Center: Basic Sciences, Clinical Research, Human Biology, Public Health Sciences or our newest area, the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Institute). Students spend a nine week period as part of a research team in areas such as: cellular biology, developmental biology, genetics, membrane biology, molecular biology, molecular immunology, structural biology, oncogenes, or virology. Weekly student/faculty research meetings take place throughout the summer, and students are encouraged to participate in other Center colloquia and seminars.

The Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO)
The Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO) has existed since 1977 for the purpose of fostering research collaboration between the University of Washington (UW) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). JISAO's research is at the forefront of investigations on climate change, ocean acidification, fisheries assessments, and tsunami forecasting.

SMART Program at University of Colorado at Boulder:
The Summer Multicultural Access to Research Training (SMART) Program at the University of Colorado at Boulder is a 10-week research internship that prepares undergraduates for graduate programs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. Each summer, 25 students from institutions nation-wide participate in research under the guidance of faculty mentors and attend weekly workshops on scientific writing and presenting, GRE preparation, and the application process for graduate school. SMART interns earn three (3) hours of upper-division undergraduate credit in independent study, and receive a $3,200 stipend, room and board, round-trip travel, and the opportunity to participate in a variety of cultural and outdoor activities.

Student Cancer Research Fellowship Program
The University of Colorado Cancer Center, one of only 40 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers, offers opportunities for students who are interested in exploring careers in cancer medical research through our Student Cancer Research Fellowship Program.
The ten week summer fellowships pair students with preceptors from a variety of laboratories and clinics at University of Colorado Hospital, University of Colorado Denver, University of Colorado Boulder and other Denver-area health care institutions. Fellows attend twice-weekly lectures and participate in a Poster Session in August.

The Summer Internship Program (SIP) at the NIH provides an opportunity to spend the summer working side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as part of its Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) program, is offering Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) undergraduate fellowships for bachelor level students in environmental fields of study. Subject to availability of funding, the Agency plans to award approximately 30 new fellowships. Eligible students will receive support for their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer between their junior and senior years. The fellowship provides up to $19,250 per year of academic support and up to $8,000 of internship support for a three-month summer period.

The Pasteur Foundation of New York offers its Internship Program to U.S. undergraduates to conduct 10-week summer internships at the Institute Pasteur. The goal is to encourage students in the pursuit of a scientific career and to expose them to an international laboratory experience.

Central Washington University is recruiting MS students for our GK-12 project - Yakima WATERS (Watershed Research to Enhance Research in Schools). MS graduate students in biology, chemistry, geology, and resource management work with local K-12 teachers and students to bring components of their research or related science into the public classroom. Participating graduate students are supported by a WATERS fellowship in Year 1 and a regular TA or RA in Year 2.

Department of Ecology and Evolutionary BiologyThe MORPH Research Coordination Network provides support for visits of undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctorals, and early career faculty (assistant professors) between organismic and molecular labs for periods ranging from a few weeks (to learn specific techniques) to a semester (to complete the equivalent of a lab rotation and take coursework not available at the home institution). This element of planned networking activities comprises the largest component of the MORPH funds and is open to any individual with an interest in bridging the gap between organismic and molecular aspects of the evolutionary developmental biology of plants.
