Political Science Senior Earns Spot in NextGen Public Policy Academy
Leading the way through public policy: Gonzaga senior selected for national NextGen Academy
Political Science student transforms classroom learning into real-world impact
Gonzaga political science students are increasingly shaping conversations about justice, leadership and policy at the national level. This past summer, senior Taleah Ibrahim led the way by earning a competitive spot in the NextGen Public Policy Academy, a three-week immersive experience hosted by the University of Washington’s Evans School of Public Policy. Her selection reflects the growing range of opportunities Gonzaga students pursue as they prepare for lives of leadership and service for the common good.
The Academy, which includes sessions in Washington, D.C. and at partner universities nationwide, provides students with high-impact exposure to policymaking, federal agencies and public service careers. Participants also receive a $1,000 stipend, with all travel, lodging and meals fully covered — lowering barriers for students who want to engage deeply in the policy sphere. Student Experience Spotlight
From Taleah Ibrahim, Senior Political Science Major
“This summer I was given the opportunity to participate in the Nexgen Public Policy Academy. This program was three weeks total, one at Howard University in D.C. and then another two at a host school which ranged from Berkeley, University of Minnesota, or the University of Washington. This program allowed me to engage in professional development workshops, network with professionals, and visit federal agencies in D.C. I heard from a variety of public servants including congresspersons, lawyers, legislators, civil servants, and educators. This program exposed me to how public policy intersects with a diverse range of study such as international relations, education, healthcare, economics, the environment, and urban planning. The interdisciplinary approach made the program an amazing fit for a diverse range of undergraduate students. For my host school I chose the University of Washington and continued the program within the Evans School of Public Policy. While there, I had the pleasure of attending daily lectures that delved into the different techniques used to formulate public policy, and what kinds of impacts they reap on society. At the conclusion of the program, I had the honor of collaborating with two other highly motivated students to create a poster presentation detailing the effectiveness of policy matrixes and how they may be used within different case studies.”
