Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to Conduct Appellate Advocacy CLE at Gonzaga Law

September 05, 2017

Make sure to save the date, and pre-register, for the October 10, 2017 CLE led by judges of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Sponsored by the Ninth Circuit Attorney Admission Fund Committee, this CLE will be held at Gonzaga Law in conjunction with the Ninth Circuit’s special oral argument sitting at Gonzaga Law.

The Circuit’s Chief Deputy Clerk of Operations, Susan Gelmis, will begin the day with an insider’s view of appellate practice in the Ninth Circuit from process and caseload to resources, new rules and pending changes, motions practice, records and filing issues, and mediation. After learning about the nuts and bolts of Ninth Circuit practices, attendees will spend the next half-hour in a coffee break with the three Ninth Circuit judges slated to hear oral arguments later in the afternoon at the law school. These judges will also be leading the day’s panel entitled: “Do’s and Don’ts for Effective Brief Writing and Oral Arguments, and Amicus Briefs.”

In the afternoon, the Court will preside over oral arguments in the following cases, subject to change:

  • Dennis Hooper v. Jackson Cty. Sherriff’s Office, 15-35521, Dennis Hooper appeals from the judgment entered following a jury trial in his 42 U.S.C. § 1983 action alleging that a Jackson City police officer violated his Fourth Amendment rights by initiating a traffic stop without probable cause.
