About This Event
A premiere staged reading performance of "The Great Semiramis" by Cristóbal de Virués (1550–1614), translated for the first time in English by Dr. Alec Schumacher and Dr. Kathleen Jeffs. The Spanish Golden Age play, written c1580, portrays a legendary Assyrian queen as an ambitious, powerful, and ruthless ruler, charting her rise to power, sexual excesses, and ultimate violent downfall. The staged reading is directed by Prof. Charles M Pepiton and performed by a professional cast, members of the Square Top Theatre Laboratory. The event is a partnership between the Robert K. and Ann J. Powers Chair of the Humanities, Gonzaga University Departments of Theatre & Dance and Modern Languages & Literature, and the Valencian autonomous Ministry of Education, Culture, and Universities in Spain.
